I believe that is probably because fungi like oak over pine. The resinous sap in pine also has a tendency to harden, cementing the woody fibers together...just my theory based on looking at a piece of amber.<g>

Who would have thunk it, but it's true. Pine decomposes very slowly and oak very quickly.
