Why am I not surprised.... oh, because I read 1984 when I was a kid....
But geez..... OK, guess that means that the first animals I eat are the ones
I purchase from others since I won't know if they have micro chips in them....
I figured the reasons that "debit cards" were invented was to ultimately get
rid of cash, and therefore the cash society, so that government could know
every purchase we ever make.
RFIDs, are also being promoted for kids - make sure you can get your kid back
if they are kidnapped..... reminded me of some other movie made where we had
colonized some other planet, but everyone had ID chips under their skin.
Does government go to hollywood and suggest these movie ideas to them to
start brainwashing us??? LOL.
I've saved that article, thanks.

w/ the Ex... small biz's owner, oddball collection ofbusinesses. Private
investigations (40 investigators employed, plus staff), had a 30 year
contract to recycle all of Miami-Dade county trash and came up with a new
approach to scrap metal density that pissed off a lot of people :-)
... (company sold long ago in partner wars), had a chemical/pool & paper
goods supply customers in the Keys- a purchase of a company pending
bankruptcy for $500.00 (what a coup), and a fresh water lobster farm in
Ecuador, and a number of other small biz not worth mentioning (more
accurately, the mind is slipping and I can't remember them all..... LOL I
was the controller

I got 3 months intensive lessons from a client who oweowed owed.... enough to
do small biz accounting.) Hyperinflation in Ec. nearly wiped us out.
Hurricane Andrew, right thru the eye, was NOT fun. Neither were 6-8

I have prepped 4 garden areas at my parents' place, all located near existing
water supplies. Still have to build fences this winter to keep the rabbits
out. Neighbors have lots of free manure, which the local ext. office
suggested to improve the sand. I've spent a lot of time lately
figuring out how many feet to plant to get X yield, and how to preserve
foods, calculating out how many canning jars toorder, etc. (I already know
how to can and freeze food, did this a lot when I was a kid and young adult.)
At the moment, except for the distraction today.... I've been working on
garden layout, by soil needs, watering, time of year to plant etc. to
organize it in a way I feel will be logical. My dad is sort of helping me
construct irrigation that works for this area... sprinklers waste to much.
(IE he sits and tells me what to do.)
>
I've grown pet rabbits, and want to switch to NZ and/orCA. I already know
how to build the cages. Just got acatalog in the mail, and the pre-fab ones
are way too expensive. Bev has suggested a few other breeds
also. I need to track down a couple of local breeders to see what they have,
otherwise will have to travel to locate. Rabbits are a lot easier to dress
than chicken. Also, alfalfa grows here locally and it would be no problem at
all to grow "rabbit food" right here, as it grows most of the year here from
what I've seen so far.

We have wind storms here in the spring, and that could prove to be a
problem. I planted onions when I first moved here,,,, I was SOOOO excited
that they were growing beautifully, and one day a haboob hit, and flattened
the tops... so I wound up with pearl onions by accident...

I made a list of the foods I normally eat in a year, and from there have
calculated out about how much not only I eat, but my parents and brother
since we're all here.
>
I also figured that I would grow field corn and get a grinder to make chicken
food, and corn meal.
>
I have thought about goats, but that will require me to build a different
kind of fence around the gardens. I do like goat milk & cheese and suspect
they would be good for weed control on the rest of the property. One of the
neighbors has sheep & a couple of beef cows. I bet it
is really expensive the way she is feeding them.

Also for food storage, suspect stuff grown in the springtime needs to be
canned or frozen, as it gets pretty hot in the summer (not as bad as AZ
though) and then stuff harvested in the fall can include things that can be
stored in the garage, etc. Dried beans, winter squash, etc.
>
I'm sure there is going to be a big learning curve on what grows best at
which time of the year. I'm starting with "have instructions, will follow"
and from there ask some locals.
>
Oh, also, I'm ordering Red Worms to put in a pile to eat up the kitchen
leftovers etc and use the end results for fertilizer. Ditto for chicken and
rabbit fertilizer.

Bev has given me a lot information that supplements the information gleaned
from the internet. I'd like to avoid commercial fertilizers and pest
control.

The wish list would include a green house, or something that I can start the
liners in before I set them out. I haven't seen greenhouses here like they
have in S. FL at all... and suspect that is due to the spring winds that come
thru.
>
I lived for 4 months w/out electricty (only a generator to bring water up
from the well) after Andrew. Fortunately, after the roads were cleared we
could drive about 30 miles north to get food supplies. It is hard to imagine
what it would be like in some kind of economic disaster where you
could not drive a few towns over to get supplies. Food storage
(refrigeration) was a real problem after Andrew.
>
I hope that those kind of extremes don't happen again. But if it does, at
least I know a little bit about that.
>
I don't really know any people out here yet. Have met a few. Did meet one
couple that seem pretty interesting, they were selling silver eagles at the
flea market.

I suspect after I get the prep work done, the next thing coming up soon, will
be WHICH PLANTS MUST BE STARTED IN LINERS, and which seeds can I just plant
in the ground. The more of the later, the better since I don't have a
greenhouse. Although mom says I can borrow the apartment windows,,,, as the
apartment is fairly warm and has a goodsouthern exposure.
