The map doesn't tell half the story. My county is shown in white, meaning it
did not lose population. But there are two largish (40K) and two smallish
(15K) cities in the county. The rural population has been steadily shifting
from the remote areas to right around the cities.
Also these demographics only go through 2006, that is, when gasoline was
still around $2/gal. The ability to maintain an urban-like lifestyle in the
remote corners of the rural counties has become sharply more difficult of
