I do understand what you mean. My point is that twice in his life, Grant had
massive debt. He sold possessions and worked off the debt both times. He
obviously placed value on honoring his debt. The only possession he did not
sell
to pay his debt was this one slave. Yes he would lose the slave with no
compensation if you don't consider reduction of his debt compensation. He
freed
Jones and had to work to pay off that portion of his debt instead.
