"My homestead is very remote. However, I have a
driveable road around 3 sides
of my land. I used to think this was an advantage for
access but now I know it provides too much access for
others. I've periodically been losing forest
products. Have recovered some of my loses in the past
but things are getting worse. Most recently, two of my
cows were pushed out of my place, shot, and butchered
out in the woods. I'm thinking of installing some kind
of camera which would take a picture of any vehicle
traveling by so if I had a problem I could maybe have
a picture of the vehicle that might have caused it.
Any ideas? Anyone use cameras for this type of use?
Would be interested in any other suggestions one might
have. So far, they've stayed out of the house
and barns, the dogs may help but I think I need
something more now. Thanks for any suggestions."
My response:
Your problem has been solved repeatedly throughout
history. Get an extended household. Build a big manor
house with wings that encloses a small field. Bring
your cows home at night and lock the gate behind them.
Post guards. Put skulls on polls around your land.
People outside the manor compound, that live within a
days walk/jog should be removed from the premises or
enslaved. Dont worry about horsed theives, they will
have eaten them before long. Forget the camera, it
will be broken or unpowered soon. Forget the police,
they will likely come to take your stuff with various
excuses that it is for the public good, meaning mainly
them and the local warlord/mayor. As a matter of fact,
the best defense is a good offense. Become the local
warlord, buy off the police, knock off the local
potential warlord wannabees before they realize what
is happening. Confiscate firearms that dont belong to
you and yours, and enslave the people. Use your
defendable manor house like castles were used (not for
sleeping princesses or to defend the populace): sally
out of it to make punitive raids on the peasants who
dont pay their taxes. You have guns and they dont.
Party on!
