Sanders called a local television reporter and the South Atlantic regional
director of the Audubon Society, who happened to have a recording of the
defunct bird. He put them both in a boat and floated into the swamp, to play the call of the ivory-billed woodpecker into the mist.
The ivory-billed woodpecker called back.
Or at least that's what they said.
Fun story, thanks. Btw, the uncommon pileated woodpecker, which lives at Heartwood and other parts of the Ozarks, has a multi-note call while the rare ivory-billed woodpecker has a single-note call. So one would need a keen ear to validate a discovery by that method. One can be sure that Judge Sanders would have had that keen ear.
