The Columibia River 'runs' past Hanford - although some leaks into ground water were pooh-poohed (*not* a pun) the fears of fouling the Pacific Ocean (the Columbia empties into the Pacific) and West Coast salmon/other fisheries all the way up to Alaska helped to *start* the clean-up - so "the government" - guess who is attempting even more poisoning/killing.
Has there been anything more said about some of the soup basins. These are basins of liquid waste that no one knows whet is in them. Last I heard several were heating up rapidly and they were trying to cool them down. If they get too hot the least they would do is pour over into the Columbia, the worst is a chemical explosion in a huge soup of unknown radioactive waste.
Hanford has been the site of numerous nuclear experiments since the early 40s long before anyone really worried about contamination. At one time they released plutonium into the air just to see where it went.
