tvoivozhd---A six-mile meteor is not merely a possibility but absolutely inevitable in the course of time. Given ten years warning it can be pushed off course by a lens focussing the energy of the sun on the rock, turning the focal point to a gas-jet and avoiding another extinction like that of the dinosaurs, but inflicted on present earth-occupants.

An almost-as-bad event is the upswelling Yellowstone---as I recall, it has risen about thirty feet---at some point it will blow and extinguish all plant and animal life in a quarter or more of the United States. Thinking people will get out of the way of that, too.
