ENERGY FOCUS
The Next Power

What’s the next big thing in the energy industry? Small power. A lucrative new generation of devices and applications now awaits a breakthrough in portable-power technology. When it arrives, it will unleash a multibillion-dollar wave of consumer products.

ENERGY METRICS
The next 18 months will be critical for the micro fuel cell industry, forecasters say, as developers struggle to increase energy density and reduce prices. If they’re successful, the first fuel-cell-powered devices should hit the market in 2008.

LAB SPOTLIGHT
The University of Chicago’s Argonne National Laboratory is America’s oldest national lab. Scientists there are doing some of the latest work in energy research.

STARTUPS TO WATCH
Energy: HelioVolt says it’s patented a new manufacturing method that will cut solar-cell production costs in half.
