Solving the economics of hydrogen production from renewables ia a big step forward, but other obstacles remain, i.e., how do you store the damned stuff in vehicle tanks and what are now gasoline retailers. Hydrogen is economically impractical to compress, current storage systems using metal hydrides are still too inefficient for either vehicles or a hydrogen retailer.

There is another more pressing issue with the change over to hydrogen. Studies suggest that it may be as bad or worse than flourocarbons at damaging the ozone layer. I don't have the relevant citations on hand but it was in the news last winter. They talked about leakage during refueling, from tanks and equipment being a major problem and essencially unsolvable. Google if you want.

tvoivozhd---there would certainly be hydrogen leakage, and as reported last year, 10-15% damage to ozone layer likely. A possibility of it being sequestered in soil, but no definitive study on the matter. There is sufficient time for study however---in the past it took fifty years to switch from one fuel to another. I see no reason why hydrogen would be an exception

Denmark took over fifteen years to drop fossil fuel dependence to 2%, utilizing a mini Manhatten Project crash program.
With the oil superbribees in charge here, we will see no Energy Manhattan Project crash program in the U.S., regardless of consequences.
