My zone 5 (Woodstock, Illinois) vernonia is in a sunny, fairly protected, dry spot. In its 5th year it is spectacular. 6 feet or more tall and vivid purple. I wish it would re-seed - it pretty much stays put.

Have any of you zone 5 gardeners had any experience with Upland
Ironweed Vernonia glauca? I want to plant it in a wild flower meadow
in Michigan zone 5. However, my acre and a half is encircled by a
forest of evergreens and maples and is protected from wind. In the
past several years we have not experienced temperatures below minus
10 and the temps rarely go below zero anymore.

I know it has been touted as a zone 5 plant on occasions and I
purchased these from a Michigan grower. However, the rather
detailed plant tag designates it as zone 6. ARS says it's zone 5. A
Google search puts it in zone 6, far below the borders of frosty mid
west. These plants will be mulched when planted and watered several
times this fall, but then they are on there own. What are there chances?
