Large daily newspapers pay free lancers that write for the news dept. a buck a word or more. When it comes to features, that is a different story. Two decades ago Features dropped full time garden writers and opted for syndicated columnists. Wire stories can be had for $25 bucks a pop. Some go for $50 and a big name like Martha Stewart gets $75. They make their money on volume. We are slotted in that category. Playing hardball may get you bounced. I've had 2 raises in 14 years. Yes I am underpaid, but I make good money on speaker fees and get lots of perks. Last week a grower sent his helicopter to ferry Jeff and me to his open house. It was a real adventure.
