Here in the great Hoosier state, it's been against the law since 1996  to sell, plant  or propagate any Lythrum, inlcuding L. salicaria, even the "sterile" plants.

Any one have similar statutes in your states?  We are trying to pass 
this one. Any reason why this is a BAD idea?
Just curious.

01 "An Act banning the importation, transfer, and cultivation of 
orange hawkweed and
02 purple loosestrife."
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:
04    * Section 1. AS 03.05 is amended by adding a new section to read:
05            Sec. 03.05.087. Orange hawkweed and purple loosestrife; 
prohibition. (a)
06       A person may not
07                 (1)  import an orange hawkweed or purple 
loosestrife plant or any part
08       of an orange hawkweed or purple loosestrife plant into the 
state;
09                 (2)  sell, give, or otherwise transfer an orange 
hawkweed or purple
10       loosestrife plant or any part of an orange hawkweed or 
purple loosestrife plant to
11       another person, except for disposal in a manner consistent 
with a regulation adopted
12       under this section;
13                 (3)  knowingly plant or cultivate an orange 
hawkweed or purple
14       loosestrife plant.
01            (b)  The commissioner shall adopt regulations providing 
for the disposal of
02       orange hawkweed and purple loosestrife plants and plant 
parts to prevent the further
03       propagation of the species in the state.
04            (c)  A person who violates (a) of this section is 
subject to the penalty in
05       AS 03.05.090.
06            (d)  In this section,
07                 (1)  "commissioner" means the commissioner of 
natural resources;
08                 (2)  "orange hawkweed" means the plant species 
with the scientific
09       name "Hieracium aurantiacum," that also is commonly referred 
to as "devil's
10       paintbrush," "red devil," or "grim-the-collier";
11                 (3)  "purple loosestrife" means the plant species 
with the scientific
12       name "Lythrum salicaria."
