I had a similar experience. My plant from the symposium overwintered just fine its first winter and bloomed nicely, but did not come back this year--the only plant in my garden that didn't survive. Winter here in Chicago was pretty mild.

Jeff Ball and I picked up 2 E. Meadow Brights at the Chicago Garden
Writer's Symposium. Both made it through the first winter, but did not
increase in size. After blooming one up and died and the other failed to
over winter. However, the few blossoms they produced were stunning as far as
color so I would be willing to give it another try. I'd like to how others
did. I
Doppleganger, planted mid summer, put out a couple of blossoms but they
were distorted and never double-decked. This spring it has doubled in size
and hope it has matured a bit.
