GARDEN CENTERS OF AMERICA PRESENTS THE 2005 EASTERN PERFORMANCE TRIALS
Editor's Note: The hottest new plants for 2006 will be unveiled at
various garden centers along the east coast during the GCA's 2005
Eastern Performance Trials. If you want to be the first to know about
new spring varieties, this is the event to witness.
Garden Centers of America (GCA) is launching their very own performance
trial on the east coast, unveiling the hottest, new plants for spring
2006 in September of 2005.
>From Monday, Sept 19 to Saturday, September 24, the biggest names in
industry will present their 2006 plants for review at six locations
across the eastern seaboard, from historic nurseries to independent
garden centers. The introductions will include flowers, vines, shrubs,
trees, foliage and perennials.
"We are going to have a large breadth of plant material and a phenomenal
display of super performers," said Clint Albin, Project Manager for the
Eastern Performance Trials.
According to Albin, the event is important to the green industry because
it will close the marketing loop between cutting-edge products,
retailers and consumers.
"By showcasing each company's best plants to the trade and consumer
media simultaneously, we hope to create excitement for the 2006
introductions at all levels from garden centers operators to home
gardeners."
The host locations for the Eastern Performance Trials are the following:
. Conard-Pyle in Philadelphia, PA
. Homestead Growers in Annapolis, MD
. American Horticultural Society at River Farm, Alexandria, VA
. Virginia Growers, Richmond, VA,
. White's Greenhouse and Nursery, Chesapeake, VA
. McDonald Garden Center, Virginia Beach, VA
"We are thrilled to unveil 2006 new introductions and varieties," said
Don Riddle, EPT Co-Chair. "We want the Eastern Performance Trials to do
for the green industry and horticulture what Fashion Week in New York
City does for the apparel industry."

Eastern Performance Trials: Questions and Answers with Clint Albin
Clint Albin,
Manager
Eastern Performance Trials
Garden Centers of America
Editor Q: What are the Eastern Performance Trials?
Albin A: This six-day event will take place at six locations in the
mid-Atlantic region. The event will give independent garden centers an
opportunity to see new introductions in flowers, seeds, vines, shrubs,
trees, foliage and perennials. The Eastern Performance Trials is not a
tour. It is an event that takes place at stationary locations and the
attendees select where they want to go and how long they want to stay.
We are most excited about this event because the industry, garden
writers, master gardeners and the consumer media will all have an
opportunity to view the new introductions simultaneously, which we hope
will result in a closed marketing loop between lawn and garden retailers
and the end consumer: gardeners. This closed marketing loop will result
in a heightened exposure for those products in the spring of 2006.
Editor Q: Who will participate in the Eastern Performance Trials?
Albin A: It is our hope that independent garden centers, green industry
trade and consumer media and growers who specialize and target
independent garden centers will all participate.
Editor Q: You mentioned growers. How will this group benefit from
attending the event?
Albin A: By attending the Eastern Performance Trials, growers will have
an opportunity to preview what's hot for next season at the same time as
their retailer customers.
Editor Q: How are the Eastern Performance Trials different from the
California Pack Trials?
Albin A: There are a few key differences between these two very
important events. First, the September trials are on the east coast.
This represents the first time all of the biggest names in the green
industry will convene for an event on the eastern seaboard. Secondly,
the Eastern Performance Trials will offer attendees a look at woody
ornamentals, herbaceous and tropicals as part of the products people are
going to view in the displays. Third, the east coast event will offer
attendees a shorter travel time between each location.
Editor Q: Mr. Albin, what is your vision for the trials?
Albin A: Don Riddle, president of Homestead Gardens in Maryland, and
our Eastern Performance Trials Co-chair communicates our shared vision
best. He says that we hope the "Eastern Performance Trials have been
designed to do for the green industry and horticulture what Fashion Week
in New York City does for the apparel industry.
Editor Q: How will the Eastern Performance Trials benefit independent
garden centers?
Albin A: Garden center operators will be able to preview next season's
expected super-performers in terms of flowers, seeds, vines, shrubs,
trees, foliage and perennials.
Editor Q: Why are events like the Eastern Performance Trials so
important the green industry?
Albin A: With over 50% of the total sales at garden centers being
plant material, flowers, seeds, vines, shrubs, trees, foliage and
perennials are the types of products that garden centers can use to
distinguish themselves from the competition and reinforce their market
place position in the eyes of their customers.
Editor Q: How many people do we expect will attend Eastern Performance
Trials?
Albin A: Our goal this first year is 300 companies.
