I think that instead of going by the imprecise method of frost free dates and forsythia blooms etc., etc...gardeners should be learning how to use GDD's or grower degree days. Most states, through their extension offices or land grand college have published lists or are working on lists that cover diseases, weed germination, insect emergence...all based on precise GDD information. They also have web sites where GDD tracking takes place and they should be available to the public. It may take some education on our part to inform our readers how to use this system but it takes lots of the guess work out of control and has the potential to substantially reduce pesticide use due to much more precise timing applications.
