Privet is already invasive in the
South. In fact, wildly invasive. It is taking over my woods and we
haven't found an effective way to get rid of it yet. Digging out one
little tree uncovered a colossal root ball with side shoots running
all over the place. The township eventually got it out of its hole for us
with a cherry picker.
Old homesteads most likely had
privet that was pruned and tended and it wasn't a problem then, but as people
moved away from the homesteads and they were left to go wild, the privet invaded
the woods and roadsides and it is now listed as an invasive
species.
