I want to say that it was my first GWA convention and I thought it was
wonderful. I was fortunate in that I was oblivious to most of the glitches.
The accident on the highway on the way back from the NYB garden on Tuesday
that slowed us to down a crawl was not a problem for me -- since I fell
asleep. I was only upset that I fell asleep just while we were approaching
my old home site and I missed it.
The forum on how to get published was wonderful. There was a talk on water
conservation that was wonderful. There were a couple of lectures that I
found weak but on the whole I thought that the biggest problem was the
shortness of time at the tour stops and the lectures. And I really think
that we need a midday break so that I can have a nap!
I enjoyed each garden except the infamous Tarr house, although I did like
the steel pool and fence (by local Boston architects). I thought that their
wildflower meadow planted in ragweed was a total hoot! I was not that
interested in the nursery specializing in annuals but, interestingly enough,
I talked to several of the real plant people and that was one of their
favorites. It looks like design and plant people have somewhat diverse
interests.
I do wish we would not get into stereotypes: some of us former Long
Islanders could take offense. In all my years going into NYC I have never
had a negative response from anyone that I asked a question of or asked for
help from. I want to reiterate that glitches can happen anywhere. Thank you,
all you wonderful people who worked so hard and succeeded in making this an
exhilarating experience for me!
Fran

I agree with Carolyn's assessment, except that I liked Planting Fields. I
got some great shots of the terraced beds around the pool, the tea house and
the charming pink playhouse surrounded by cottage gardens. The one I could
have skipped was the private garden whose horticultural highlight was an
interesting stainless steel fence. The homeowners left instructions that we
not look in the windows at any of their stuff or "leave our greasy forehead
prints on the glass."
I enjoyed all the other gardens and think the planning committee did a great
job. I also did the optional tour to NYBG and Wave Hill. Wave Hill is
absolutely wonderful. We didn't have enough time at NYBG, but the
conservatory is a jewel. I'd like to return someday to see more there.
Marianne Binetti's session "Organize Your Freelance Life..." was excellent.
So was "Independent Publishing Options," presented by Betty Mackey, Jim Long
and Nellie Neal. I'd recommend both those tapes. As always with concurrent
sessions, you miss half of what's offered. I'm considering buying the tapes
so I can hear more.
