Fran, ask some one like Paul Rogers if one can do light preparation of the highly disturbed surface soils inside Interstate Route 495 and expect to see only those species that were deliberately planted. the seed bank everywhere is substantial and MUST be dealt with to get what the average "person-in-the-street" expects in a meadow in a can. However, use of glyphosate can make it easy to clear the seed bank in about 24-30 months of cycling through exposing the seeds to germination friendly conditions and then when the plants are 4-6 wks old killing with glyphosate. I have a very nice neighbor who is in the second year of perhaps 5-7 of learning to grow tomatos. I started when I was a freshman in high school and had educational opportunities unavailable to my neighbor. Horticulture takes a lot of mental effort to do well. The Rodales sold too many people a bill of goods when they said just pile on fecal material and everything will be fine no matter what you are growing.
