The first phase (32,000 plants) of what will eventually be a four-acre meadow
was planted this past spring at River Farm, the American Horticultural
Society's headquarters. When completed, it will include more than 100,000
(mostly American native) perennials and grasses, as well as some annuals to
supply additional color. The grasses and forbs are being planted in plug form
but the annuals will be seeded in.
Kurt Bluemel of Kurt Bluemel nursery designed the meadow for AHS and is
donating all the plants. You may have seen a short article about the meadow
in the July/August issue of The American Gardener magazine.
It will take several years of pretty rigorous maintenance to get the entire
meadow looking good, but eventually we hope it will inspire people to try it
on a smaller scale in their home gardens.
