Title: Re: [gwl-g] FW: Wild Plant's Gene May Protect Potato Crop That's the trouble with some of these writers now. They tend to make things sound like genetic engineering when they aren't. I recognize the technique used here and it's repeated backcrossing. That is, cross wild x domestic. Pick the best, most resistant offspring. Cross that times domestic again. Pick the best, most resistant offspring again. Done right, after a few generations you have what is essentially the domestic type with almost all the genes from the wild type selected out except for the ones that give the desired disease resistance. Once you have a good quality breeding line established with the gene for resistance, you can test for just the gene in a number of ways.
For instance, one method is to take pollen and extract the genetic material from it. Spread the material on a gel plate and apply current. Some protiens (genes are protiens) migrate torwards the positive pole, some towards the negative pole. They will make a distinctive pattern with each variety, since each one has different genes. Do this with the original variety and the one that has the new gene bred in. The two varieties will make very similar patterns EXCEPT for the added gene. When you know what pattern the new gene produces, you can use that as a test for it in other plants. Makes a much more efficient way to screen plants for a given gene.
