I haven't grown the wild quinine but I grow dropseed and have seen in several gardens around here (Chicago). It forms a clump and does not seem to be invasive. Its main attribute is that when it's "blooming" and the summer heat is beating down, it really does smell like hot buttered popcorn. carolyn ulrich

Does anyone have experience growing these 2 plants?
Wild quinine Parthenium integrifolium
Prairie dropseed Sporobolus heterolepis
Both are available from Prairie Nursery www.prairienursery.com
My questions are:
Does Wild quinine live up to the catalog description? Does the plant age
gracefully in autumn? What does it look like after frost?
"Rare and beautiful. One of the most garden-worthy native perennials. It has
all the characteristics one looks for in a good garden plant: good form,
excellent foliage, long bloom time and resistance to just about every bug, disease
and weather problem there is. The pure white flowers bloom from June all the
way into September. Plant with Blazingstars for a stunning color combination.
Grows three to five feet tall in rich loam, sand and clay in full sun. Hardy to
Zone 4."
Does Prairie dropseed live up to its name, that is does it drop seed
profusely, and is it "invasive"?
Thanks for advice.
