Now and then everybody feels down. Ten percent of Americans are reported to suffer from a depressive disorder. This type of mental diseases includes major depression. Common symptoms of major depression are as follows:
No interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy, feeling sad or empty, crying without reason "no reason", feeling slowed down or feeling unsatisfied and unable to sit still, losing or putting on weight, thoughts about death or suicide; trouble thinking, recalling things or concentrating; trouble making daily decisions; problems sleeping, in particular in the early morning or waiting to sleep all the time; feeling tired all the time.
Depression is thought to be related to a chemical imbalance in the brain that makes it hard for cells to communicate with one another.
Depression can result from nerve-wracking times, such as the death of somebody you love, a divorce or layoffs. But it can also develop out of the blue. Certain medicines, alcohol and drug addiction, can bring on depression.
Depression can be cured with medicines, or specialist form of counseling called psychotherapy, or with both. Antidepressants are medications used to help people who have depression.
Chemicals in the brain known as neurotransmitters are needed for regular brain function. Antidepressants help make these natural chemicals more available to the brain.
Normally, antidepressants are taken leastways for six to twelve months. Sometimes, patients and their physicians may conclude that antidepressants are needed for a longer period of time.
Antidepressants can improve your mood, sleep, concentration and appetite. It may take several weeks to see the results. There are several classes of antidepressants. You and your doctor may have to try several before discovering what works best for you.
Sometimes medicines trigger adverse side effects. They may range from patient to patient and from drug to drug. For example, when you first begin your antidepressant you may feel tired, have trouble sleeping or feel sick to your stomach. The side effects typcally disappear after a while.
Even after a year of treatment, there is still about a 10% probability of depression returning when treatment is over. Some people take antidepressants for several years.
