Hi Dr. Kealy -- I made use of your 1982 book 2 or 3 years ago when I was writing a paper for a class on Mark's gospel -- I found it extremely useful and I would like to encourage you in your work on the new edition. We should tremble before we make recommendations to you -- who knows more about Mark than Dr. Kealy? And someone more knowledgeable than I will have a more comprehensive list, but I would say that the following items are at least worth your attention: Fred Guyette Reference Librarian Erskine College and Seminary The Gospel of Mark: a socio-rhetorical commentary By: Witherington, Ben. Grand Rapids : Eerdmans, 2001. The christology of Mark's Gospel: narrative christology and the Markan Jesus By: Malbon, Elizabeth Struthers Source: Who do you say that I am?, p 33-48. Source: Religious Studies Review, 17 Ja 1991, p 16-22. The Gospel of Mark in recent study. By: Hurtado, Larry W. Source: Themelios, ns 14 Ja-F 1989, p 47-52. Mark and the historical-critical method : the challenge of recent literary approaches to the Gospel. By: Telford, William R. Source: Synoptic Gospels, p 491-502. Louvain : Leuven Univ Pr, 1993 Minor, Mitzi The spirituality of Mark : responding to God Louisville, Ky. : Westminster John Knox Press, c1996 Author: Black, C. Clifton. Title: Does Suffering Possess Educational Value in Mark's Gospel? Journal: Perspectives in Religious Studies Year: 2001, Volume: 28(1): Page: 85-98. Description: Charles Talbert's book Learning through Suffering investigated how suffering is viewed as educational in several NT writings, in a way parallel to views in the Hellenistic world and some Jewish writings. Sharyn Dowd in Prayer, Power, and the Problem of Suffering describes the tension between the suffering of Jesus and the power of God who does not remove the suffering. Susan Garrett's book, The Temptations of Jesus in Mark's Gospel, emphasizes the theme of testing. In Mark, the stories of suffering highlight the need for faith, which suffering, like that of Jesus, can be redeemed only by God. The appropriate response to suffering is faith manifested by prayer. In Mark, suffering does not seem to be imposed by God to provide educational value, but in suffering one does learn, particularly at the cross, that Jesus is God's Son, and what prayer and faith are. In that sense suffering is epistemic. Author: Danove, Paul. Title: The Narrative Function of Mark's Characterization of God. Journal: Novum Testamentum Year: 2001, Volume: 43(1): Page: 12-30. Description: 199 explicit and grammatically required implicit references to God in Mark are identified and categorized. The six general semantic relationships are agent, experiencer, source, goal, benefactor, or patient. The characterization of God closely relates Jesus to God establishing the credentials of Jesus that encourages the reader's identification with Jesus. Other characters in Mark are either aligned or opposed to Jesus thus exposing their relationship with God and providing criteria for evaluating their actions. AND, a local favorite: Author: Tannehill, Robert C. Title: THE DISCIPLES IN MARK: THE FUNCTION OF A NARRATIVE ROLE. Journal: J of Religion Year: 1977 Volume: 57(4) Page: 386 - 405 Description: Following the suggestion of Perrin, attempts to use a general literary criticism in looking at Mark. Stress on narrative composition and on an understanding of how stories are told and how they communicate are involved. The writer of Mark uses the disciples' role to mirror his purposes and creates a dialogue between himself and the reader by revealing a knowledge of the reader's situation and needs. Sean P. Kealy C.S.Sp wrote: Dear Colleagues, In 1982, I published Mark's gospel, A History of its Interpretation (Paulist Press) which was the first history of Mark's Gospel. On the advice of a number of friends I am intending to revise it and bring it up to date. I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions sources etc. Your's very sincerely, Sean P.
