Abstract
The Gospel of Mark narrates a retelling of the Israelite epic by way of the life and ministry of Jesus, and this for the express purpose of including those like the believer’s in Rome whose community reflected a mixture of Jewish and Gentile believers. This mixture of people, although previously excluded from the story because of ritual purity laws, could now claim to authentically demonstrate an ideal gathering of God’s people. The school of thought of those who first regarded Jesus as their founder-teacher, those from whom we have received our earliest Christian writings, is most clearly revealed in two narratives within the first eight chapters of the Gospel of Mark and again in the transition section of 8.27-10.45. This early community of Jesus retold the Israelite Epic via the Jesus narrative, a narrative that implies that a mixture of people, the Church of Jewish and Gentile Messianic followers, presents the ideal community under God’s reign and rule when established by Jesus through the power of God.
