A Study On the New Testament’s Usage of the Old Testament Material as Seen In the Gospel of Mark, By Harry Staiti
This paper will outline how the Gospel of Mark, in its final form, narrates a retelling of the Israelite epic by way of the life and ministry of Jesus, and this for the express purpose of including those who were previously excluded from the story because of ritual purity laws. The school of thought of those who first regarded Jesus as their founder-teacher, those from whom we have received our earliest Christian writings, is most clearly revealed in two narratives within the first eight chapters of the Gospel of Mark. These narratives reveal how the early communities of Jesus retold the Israelite Epic via the Jesus narrative, a narrative that implies that a mixture of people, Jewish and Gentile, “ritually clean” and “ritually unclean,” presents the ideal community under God’s reign and rule when they are established by Jesus through the power of God.
The first focus of this paper is to demonstrate that the Gospel of Mark in its final form (hereafter “Mark”) is an editorial composition of pre-existing narratives from these first followers of Jesus. The second focus is...
