Dear Larry:
At 09:11 AM 9/30/00, you wrote:
I've heard the gospel of Mark being referred to as "pearls on a string". Why is this? Who said it and when? And where?
I've also heard the gospels being referred to as "a passion story with an introduction". Ditto on this one. Does anyone know who first said it, when and where?
The first such expression, that I know of, didn't single out Mark, but described all the Gospels. The quotation is:
"To state the matter somewhat provocatively, one could call the Gospels passion narratives with extended introductions."
The citation is:
Martin Kahler, "The So-called Historical Jesus and the Historic Biblical Christ" (originally published in 1896), Fortress Press, Philadelphia, 1988, p. 80 n. 11.
Best Regards,
Mike
