Mike,

Thank you for your very thoughtful and thought-provoking response.  There are several points I would like to respond to. Unfortunately, I am pressed for time to get to the Jesus Seminar and I am in Florida the first of next week.  I would like to get back to you next week sometime.

In light of your post on locating the Markan community, I wonder if you have any response to the recent volume, The Gospel for All Christians, edited by R. Bauckham (with contributions by several others) In the first essay, Bauckham argues that none of the gospels was written with a specific community, but rather was written, as the title suggests, 'for all Christians.' (Your own earlier work is mentioned on p. 17). In fact, Bauckham concludes "any reader who finds the argument of this chapter convincing should cease using the terms Matthean community, Markan community, Lukan community, and Johannine community. They no longer have a useful meaning" (45). I must admit to finding Bauckham's thesis attractive and persuasive, but am eager to hear from one who has written and thought more deeply about this subject.
