Thank you so much for your response - for the first time since starting this
project I've connected!!!

My boss wouldn't give me the work-time to read any guides from back-to-front
but I've been skimming through it. A bit of my confusion came because I was
reading mixed MSSQL and Sybase articles in terms of connecting because I was
advised earlier to use MSSQL connection settings because they were basically
the same DB (or at least similar enough - in this case, apparently not).

I really appreciate the time you took to look and respond, thank you!

Did you read the user guide? See http://www.freetds.org/userguide/.

For Sybase use version 5.0.
Version 8.0 is obsolete and for Microsoft version.
Also servername is mssql_tds (from freetds.conf), not 101.215.76.250 (-S tsql
argument, for ip/hostname use -H and -p for port). tsql -C print the default
version used in configure, so it always print (in your case) 4.2.
For ODBC driver name we suggest FreeTDS, also using same name for driver and
connection can be confusing.
