My mistake. tsql produces the message
Default database being set to <foo>
*before* sending the login packet. It does that in case the server rejects
the login because the user is not authorized to use the database. (It may
or may not do that, depending on a flag in the login packet.)
I'll change the text of that message to make it clearer.
The server does send a message, #5701 to be precise, and that message won't
arrive until after the login is accepted. But the message you saw came from
tsql.
