1. do you have a firewall running on the database server.
If so, have you put an exception into it's configuration
2. have you set MSDE to allow remote connections?

I'm trying to connect to MSSQL / MSDE 2000. One clue is when I try to do the
telnet test from linux or Windows it does not work.
