I finally found the problem. There's a SQL Server trigger that was failing, and also failing to properly raise an error properly. Sorry. In my defense, I had nothing to do with it's creation ... it is apparently around from the days when the trusty old MS Access database was 'upsized' to SQL Server - the upsizing wizard made this trigger. I've altered the RAISERROR line, and all is well.
