This is definately the way to go. This is what we've done and haven't had
any issues really. We were worried about performance, but it's fine for the
most part.

We're running Oracle 10G on Linux. We just uploaded the jTDS source to
Oracle and then built the stored procs to use that connection.

which version of oracle server do you use?

If it is 8.1 or high you could try to wrap a java stored procedures around
jTds project or native jdbc driver.
I did exactly what you looking for but five years ago with 8.0. Then java
machine was raised as alternative SP engine by oracle and ... viola, because
extlib->proC->freetds performance was comparable with PL/Sql->jdbc call
stack. Even though I forgotten details but result remember excellent.
