Edward,

Just to make sure I understand: On Solaris, you disabled libiconv. tsql
works, but the unit test returns an error?

I don't expect the Solaris libiconv to work. I do expect
--disable-libiconv to work, particularly because you found
"configure:18713: libiconv disabled" in config.log. As a matter of
fact, that --disable option was added specifically for Solaris
configurations.

tsql is statically linked, and "tsql -C" should show no iconv library.
Maybe, somehow, the unit tests are being run-time linked to another
FreeTDS library. You could tell with ldd(1) or by looking at the top of
the a TDSDUMP log. Rather than running the whole "make check", just
(for instance):

$ cd src/dblib/unittests
$ TDSDUMP=dump ./t0001
$ head dump

The log file will show the version of FreeTDS and include a more
detailed message of the cause of the assertion error.

HTH.
