If you're using ODBC from PHP, the controlling standard is the ODBC
standard. It is documented as part of Microsoft's MDAC SDK. That
determines what PHP *can* do (within the implemented capabilities of the
driver). What PHP does do is, of course, up to PHP.
Note the rows affected (not "effected") figure is not available until
after the last row has been retrieved from the server. The server
itself does not know the rowcount of a SELECT statement before
delivering the results to the client.
That said, I'm not sure ODBC is your best choice. I think the technical
favorite for PHP these days is the mssql extension. It doesn't use ODBC
(it uses db-lib) and might work better.
