Simply
TDSDUMP=stdout /usr/local/bin/tsql --Sxxx -Uxxx -Pxxx
Are you using protocol version 8.0 ?
If you are using FreeTDS for production I suggest you latest 0.63 RC
version instead.
In 0.64 there has been some changes in network layer so it's possible it
fails.
