No. I just tested tsql from my XPSP2 SQL Server Developer edition box
and it works fine. I connected and ran a query from Solaris 9 sparc.

You have to use SQL Server authentication (not only integrated). I do
use the firewall and had to allow connections on tcp/1433 and tcp/1434.
