Maybe I don't understand what you mean?


Microsoft:

varchar is a single-byte encoded string, encoded according to the
server's installed character set. Maximum 8000 bytes, 8000 characters.

nvarchar is a UCS-2 string. Maximum 8000 bytes, 4000 characters.

Sybase:

"The server types nchar and nvarchar are converted internally to char
and
varchar types, which correspond to the DB-Library type constant SYBCHAR."

I guess sybase added "support" for nvarchar to be more compatible with
Microsoft's T-SQL. Or perhaps it's a SQL92 type.
