Unless you used the --prefix to ./configure, the location is
/usr/local/etc/freetds.conf. You can override it with
${HOME}/.freetds.conf.

That's fine, as long as that's where iodbc expects it.
Use TDSDUMP to generate a log file. It will record what machine FreeTDS
is trying to connect to. Pay careful attention to "server/servername" in
odbc.ini.
If you need more help, post your odbc.ini and freetds.conf.
