It's called "reply to self" and it's harmful only if you don't know you're
doing it. ;-)

Wow. That's quite a hack.
The official advice on OS X is to use CVS and libtool 1.5.5.
The source distributions, including the nightly snapshot, have a configure
script generated by libtool 1.4a. I don't know if we want to upgrade
libtool; it's by no means a certainty that newer libtools are better.
It's tempting to patch what we have, along the lines you found.
