Actually I added the --enabled-shared in an attempt to fix this. But I just
did a:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/freetds --with-tdsver=7.0 and I have the
same problem. I dl freetds-0.53 and during the ./configure (same as above) I
got:
*** Warning: the GNU linker, at least up to release 2.9.1, is reported
*** to be unable to reliably create shared libraries on AIX.
*** Therefore, libtool is disabling shared libraries support. If you
*** really care for shared libraries, you may want to modify your PATH
*** so that a non-GNU linker is found, and then restart.

Pretty Cool message huh ?
I did'nt know there was a issue with gcc and AIX but that looks like that is
my problem.

Thank again for the help

My pleasure.

OK, so "make install" is copying the static libraries and not the shared
ones.

Hmm. The only thing you did that I've never done is "--enable-shared". I
wonder if perhaps that's getting in your way. The syntax help:

--enable-shared=PKGS build shared libraries default=yes

is weird. "PKGS" doesn't usually stands for "yes/no", and "yes" is a funny
name for a package. :/

Why don't you just remove it from your configure invocation, and see what
happens? This for sure: you don't need it.

Well, no, it wouldn't, because the shared libraries aren't there.

"make install" does more than just copy the files. I don't know every
detail, but symbolic links and chmod are two things it does.

Just to be clear, $SYBASE isn't used by FreeTDS in your setup. It might be
used by something looking for Sybase libraries (for which FreeTDS likes to
substitute).
