I beg to differ. 'xterm -u8' from my XFree86 distro is pretty clear
evidence that not only is there a free xterm that understands it, it's
*the* xterm (for Linux users, at least).

In addition, both gnome-terminal and konsole are utf8-capable.

Now, there are still plenty of curses-based apps around which have
trouble calculating string widths, but there's certainly no dearth of
terminals capable of handling the glyphs.
