Thanks. I should have mentioned. During the RH installation, there was a
screen asking about the firewall setup. I chose "no firewall", which
should have meant complete access. For some reason (don't get me started)
they didn't install an ftpd or telnetd, though.

$ sudo /sbin/ipchains --list
ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel

ssh refuses entry, too, even locally:

[jklowden@sandbox jklowden]$ ssh sandbox
ssh: connect to address 127.0.0.1 port 22: Connection refused

Other suggestions?
