As near as I can tell you are missing libgcc.a being linked in
somewhere...but where? apache looks like a good spot maybe...

cd apache-1.3.x
LIBS="-lgcc"
export LIBS
./configure ...yada yada yada..
make
make install

or something like that.

The alternative is to remove all references to "assert()", but that is a
real pain.
