I found a similar problem using FreeTDS - we were just as stumped until we
tried using IP rather than a DNS name. Seemed to solve it in our situation.
We could telnet to the DNS name port 1433 fine, but had to use the IP for
FreeTDS I believe. It was a while ago, and we were changing a number of
things around, so I can't be 100% sure that was what solved it - but I think
it might have been
