Rick,

If I understand your question, yes.  But I think it's really a networking question.

I can't see any reason why TDS traffic wouldn't be perfectly happy on, say, IPsec or PPTP.  You might have server issues (I don't know) if you're trying to to PPTP on the same box that's running SQL Server.  That could be fixed with a router, though.
