I addition to my last posting:
I also noticed that when I use a persistent connection
only once sleeping connection to MS-SQL from PHP script is left open.
So the script can run many times without a problem.
But when the user aborts the script in the middle of running, the next time
that it will
be used another one sleeping connection will be left open.
So in a little time the script runs out of connections.
I tried to use ignore_user_abort but the problem remains.
