If you really mean what you wrote, then the client will be downloading
the JDBC driver from the web server along with the rest of the applet.
You're going to have to deal with security issues if you use this
approach. By default a Java applet is allowed to talk to the host it
came from, but not any other servers, so you'd have to get into the
business of obtaining a certificate and instructing your users how to
accept it, etc. You might want to revisit your design decisions and
consider having the querying of the database take place on your web
server, in which case that's the machine where you'd put (and run) your
JDBC driver.
