Title: Chlorine
Wayne,
I have used this filter from Charley's on an outdoor faucet for a
couple of years for watering my backyard garden. I discovered the
exact same filter is marketed by another company to install in your
shower to remove chlorine from your shower water.
I got the shower one first, and after installing it checked the
water with a typical OTO test kit like you use for checking chlorine
in a swimming pool. (Glass of water, five drops of OTO, and the water
turns bright yellow if chlorine is present; clear if chlorine is
absent.) When I got a glass of water from the shower filter and tested
it, it turned bright yellow. I called the manufacturer of the carbon
filter (the unit Charley's sells is just a plastic housing with a
carbon filter inside which is the replaceable part), and the tech rep
I talked to told me you can't test for chlorine with that filter
using an OTO test. I got lost in the science he was giving me and took
his word for it. I have continued to use it -- at least I don't smell
chlorine in the shower like I do in the rest of the tap water.
SO -- I'm assuming the one I installed outside is removing
chlorine as long as it has a clean carbon filter. (The filter can be
soaked in vinegar to "clean" it, and turned around and
installed backward to backwash it and extend the life.) I DO NOT USE
THIS WATER TO MAKE CT -- I DON'T TRUST IT THAT MUCH. I AERATE THE
WATER IN MY 30 GALLON BREWER FOR AN HOUR OR TWO BEFORE MAKING
TEA.
When I'm not making tea I keep a 30 gallon trash can filled with
my CT air stones and keep it aerated to hand water my garden.
If anyone knows anything about testing for chlorine in
"city" water that could clear up the confusion I described
above I'd appreciate knowing about it.
Tx,
William
This in from Wayne Lewis:
Charley's Greenhouse...www.charleysgreenhouse.com sells a faucet filter to remove chlorine from water going into a garden hose. Flow rate is 2.5 gallons per minute. Cost is 32 US dollars and replacement cartridge is $17.95.
We have no idea if this works, but wonder what people think? Is it possible? Why not?
