Many of us use SFI and Dr. Ingram. Perhaps you might start by reading the SFI's Compost Tea Manual. It is a good primer on recipes and basic components. It would also be good for you to read Dr. Ingram's ezine available at soilfoodweb.com.
 
A well designed machine, tested and true composts and adjutants will get good results without testing. As you grow and profit from the results testing should be done to further develop your brewing skills.
